i absolutely adore the way you describe your voice because before i even read your description, it’s what i pictured when reading “with the beautiful voice.” reading the world in your words is such a silky experience
Hi Allyson, thank you for this. I am always so fascinated by people's internal worlds and what influences it, and one of those things is the languages they speak. I'm a French grammar tutor. The times I get to teach people whose first language is completely different from the one we're supposed to converse in are usually the most rewarding. I get to see their point of view, their vision of French as a language, but also how it integrates into their minds and mixes with who they already are. In return, I get pieces of how their language functions, on how it's different from me and I integrate a bit of it each time. Hearing the people I'm close to speak different languages from mine (Hungarian and Arabic come to mind) is also magical to me. I always wonder what this part of them that I won't have access to looks like. But I'll only know if I learn to understand it.
bita, this is such an incredible comment to receive. this is such a core perspective that influenced me to write this piece. a lot of the time i have to be my mom's tutor of sorts because she knows the word in her native tongue, but not the english equivalent. hungarian and arabic are such beautiful languages, i'm obsessed.
" But I'll only know if I learn to understand it." i need this tattooed across me.
thank you for reading so intentionally. you're such a star. <3
I am so fascinated by limits in translation due to lack of synonyms in different languages, or, even better, should-be-synonymous words still carrying different connotations. (Part of why I’m studying linguistics) I’ve also been thinking for a while about the imperfection of language as a means for communication due to our all unavoidably having our own idiolects, and you described this so well!
i love linguistics and translation majors. you guys are genuinely incredible. thank you so much for leaving such a lovely comment and i am rooting for you. you are contributing something incredible to the world. x
"She often uses me to connect with people because I have a habit of being open and warm to anyone I speak to. Some days I think it’s a bad habit because whenever I invite people in I have a hard time getting them out." help I relate so hard my coworkers at my last job were so obsessed with me. one of them still randomly texts me sometimes bc i gave her my number for work purposes when we were working from home even tho I haven't responded to her since I moved ahshdhfhfhdh
also god I feel this, I find linguistics fascinating. I'm in the middle of a cdrama phase and it's so fun to start picking up Mandarin words just bc I'm hearing them so frequently. (also watched a Taiwanese drama in between and it's also really fun to hear the differences in pronunciation btwn Taiwanese Mandarian and Mainland Mandarin)
no the random coworker obsession is a canon event, lmao. it's so odd because i start becoming so protective of myself. i love that you're in a cdrama phase, i hope you're finding some favorites. thank you for reading, angel <3
the untamed unleashed a xianxia obsession LMAO. I'm on my fifth xianxia and have added dozens to my watchlist bc it is my new favorite genre 🫣 Fangs of fortune is the best show of all time I think. (also I am trying so hard to restrain myself from typing out a whole essay about xianxia sudhdhdhd like the fixation is BAD)

hailey i literally love you so much, it may be concerning. <3

Thank you <33 It often feels fruitless and self-serving, but more appreciation in the world for the beauty of language can only be a good thing!
THE WORDS MAY BE THE SAME BUT THE EXPERIENCE NEVER IS.
EXACTLY.
so tender i could cry
i adore you so much. thank you for being here.
